For over 35 years, I have proudly watched the political transformation of Texas and its citizens. When I first entered the Texas House of Representatives, I was one of 8 Republicans. Now, 79 Republicans join me in serving as elected officials in the House.
The day I was elected Speaker of the House was a historic day in Texas history: a Republican was sworn in as Governor, a Republican was chosen by Texans as Lieutenant Governor, a Republican majority sat in the House and the Senate, and after 130 years, members of the House elected a Republican Speaker.
